The gun has compact structure, reliable action, good serviceability, and low cost. It uses 9mm Balabellum pistol ammunition. There are two models of wooden support and folding support. Wooden support is an early product, and folding support is standard. The variant guns with the same structure are: UZI9mm light submachine gun, UZI9mm mini submachine gun, UZI9mm semi-automatic carbine and UZI9mm pistol.
It was finalized in the early 1950s and was produced by the Israeli Military Industry Corporation (IMI). It was used as a standard submachine gun for the Israeli army. The military of Germany and Belgium was also equipped with this gun. It has now become a submachine gun widely used in Western countries.
